Richard Lamb Clinic
“Allow it to happen. Don‘t
 make it happen.”
Teaching Philosophy
“It’s not just talent that makes you a good rider, but persistence and keeping at it when things get tough. In riding you have to focus on what you want to happen instead of on what you’re afraid might happen.... If someone doesn’t understand something, it’s not his or her fault. When riders are willing to learn, I’ll help them as much as they want so we can get the task accomplished.... People learn in different ways. I try to choose the way that works best for each individual horse and/or rider....”
Believing it is the instructor’s responsibility to make him/herself understood and to work with each rider as an individual, Richard is always seeking to learn more about how to teach ever more effectively. He never sacrifices the classical basics, especially balance, and believes strongly that our command of these basics directly correlates with our training and performing success - whether we are beginning or advanced riders.
Emphasis on Balance
“Your horse is only as balanced as you are.... No matter what hat you are wearing or what saddle you are sitting in, I believe our “self carriage” determines our horses’ “self carriage”. I try to help riders learn to use their aids with less physical and mental effort in order to work with and not against their horses on the flat and over fences. Horses naturally want to move in balance and it is our job to make it easier for them to do what they already know and want to do. ”
 Experience
Now living in Aiken, SC, Richard grew up in Woodstock, VT helping his family run a horse farm and riding camp with up to 80 horses and a winter ski lodge. His family showed hunters and jumpers, evented, joined Pony Club activities and fox hunted. For 5 years he lived in Ireland (’75 -’80) helping  manage his father’s  guest house and riding center while riding show jumpers, event horses and race horses. He foxhunted extensively and he also worked with Eric Horgan (Irish 3-day Event Team) for two years. After returning from Ireland, Richard lived in Chester County, PA teaching riders and training and/or competing  horses at all levels of eventing, showjumping and dressage. For over 35 years, he has been coaching and conducting clinics in all disciplines, working with all levels of young riders and adult riders. Richard has become a noted show jumping course designer, building courses at venues such as Jackson Hole, WY, and for The USPC Championships as well as The Foxhall Cup CCI*** (’00 – ’05). He also helped develop and organize the equestrian venue and competitions for the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games, where he was Technical Coordinator for Show Jumping.   Because Richard cares deeply about the quality of both what he teaches and how he teaches, he has become highly respected and is widely popular as a teacher, trainer and clinician as he travels locally, regionally and nationally.

Richard has been involved with the US Pony Clubs for years, starting as a member of the Upper Valley Pony Club on the VT/NH border and continuing until the present. He has been a National Examiner for more than 20 years, was on the Board of Governors for 2 terms and served as Chair of the Show Jumping Committee while helping to develop the Show Jumping Standards for the Upper Level ratings. He teaches clinics in all the disciplines for clubs and regions around the country. He has also designed SJ courses for various disciplines at the USPC Championships for over 20 years.

And in 2008, Richard successfully passed the Level III Assessment for the USEA Instructors Certification Program (ICP).
